Ceramics Care & Usage

SHOP for Italian Ceramics and Majolica
FREE SHIPPING for all orders over $199 (more info)

The Italian Ceramics and Majolica that we offer are handmade & hand painted by individual artists and not reproduced in a factory setting by machines. Each piece is unique and one of a kind. Therefore, you may notice a slight color, indentation, design, glaze or size variation or perhaps a tiny smudge, a small dimple, a paint spot or a loose fitting lid. These variances & imperfections are are not considered manufacturing defects.  They are evidence of an original, unique, one of a kind, handcrafted, handpainted piece of artwork created artisans.

All of our Italian ceramics that are intended to have contact with food (dinnerware, serving pieces, tabletop accessories, wall plates, all canisters and jars, pitchers, cups, etc…) are food safe & have met FDA standards and have been tested and approved for safe use. Handwashing is recommended. Harsh scouring powders and harsh scourers can damage the glaze on the ceramics. To remove food or drink (eg. coffee, tea, balsamic) stains that have developed over time, mix a solution of 2 tablespoons of chlorine bleach per quart of water, soak a for a few minutes, then rinse. You can place your Italian Ceramic, Italian pottery or majolica in the dishwasher in a less intense low energy-saving/fine china cycle with a cool dry or air dry at the end.  If you do place Italian Ceramics/Majolica items in a dishwasher, make sure the pieces are not touching and are secure in place. Italian ceramics should not be used in the microwave or oven.

Italian Ceramics and Majolica are made of earthenware. Therefore Majolica/Italian Ceramics has a tendency to craze.  Crazing (minuscule lines in the glaze) is common with repeated or extreme use.  Crazing also occurs when you expose your Italian ceramic or piece of majolica to extreme temperatures, such as boiling water or direct heat. Crazing has no significant effects on the ceramics, it is mainly cosmetic.  To lessen crazing we suggest the following: (1) Avoid drastic temperature changes, that in rare occasions can shock the ceramics and cause them to break. (2) Since ceramics absorb cold, run warm water on the ceramic piece before placing food or drink on or in it. (3) Put a metal spoon in your ceramic while pouring a hot liquid to deflect the heat.

A copy of the above is given with every ceramic purchase.
