"Roosters of Fortune"
The Rooster Pitcher - An Italian Tradition
The famous ceramic Italian Rooster Pitcher symbolizes "Good Fortune" and/or "Good Luck." It is an Italian tradition to give an Italian Rooster Pitcher to a friend or relative, ideally as a housewarming or wedding gift, to protect them from trespassers and dangers. Some people will even buy an Italian Rooster Pitcher for themselves to bring "Good Fortune" and/or "Good Luck" to their homes. Each Rooster Pitcher purchased comes with the story/legend of the Italian Rooster Pitcher written on a small scroll. SHOP for this rooster pitcher and other Italian Ceramics and Majolica & receive FREE SHIPPING for all Italian Ceramic orders over $85.
The origin of the "Rooster Pitcher" dates back to the early Renaissance period in the Republic of Florence in Italy. During this time, one of the most powerful and leading landowning families, the Medici’s, held a feast in the nearby village of Gallina for their peasants. Later that night after the feast while everyone was asleep, a rival family sent assassins to assassinate a leading member of the Medici family to gain power. The assassination attempt failed when the roosters in the yards in and around the village started cackling, which in turn awoke the leading member of the Medici family and their guards. The assassins were caught and executed. In honor of the roosters, artisans were commissioned by the Medici family to create ceramic replicas of the roosters to be used as wine pitchers. These "Rooster Pitchers" had various artwork and designs painted on them. The "Rooster Pitchers" were then given to the peasants and friends for good luck against danger.
